Psalm 62: “In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you.”

Waiting an hour or two in the airport I have told myself often that I should do some reading. And I do have a book with me. I find it hard to read. No, the noise doesn't bother me. The human parade is too endlessly interesting to take my eyes off it and limit them to the written page. They go by in such variety. I'll never be able to see all of them. Just in itself the variety is seemingly unending. They're young and old, healthy and infirm, sauntering or running, smiling and grim, in every color of complexion, every height and diameter, dressed fashionably or very informally, long-haired or short, etc..

I argue a bit with myself: should I make a deliberate effort to read or let myself be amazed by the new faces and figures that go by? The latter usually wins. We take trips to see the Tetons or the marvels of ancient Rome or the pyramids. I might enjoy that, but I think watching the human race go by is equally worthwhile. In 1 John we hear the writer argue that if we do not love the people we see, how can we love the God we do not see? The point is that if we cannot find something lovable in the visible creation, how could we love an invisible God?

Psalm 27: “I believe I shall see the Lord’s goodness / in the land of the living.

Wait for the Lord; be strong; / be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord!”
