Psalm 62: “In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you.”

The Reflection for June 6 described a couple serving lunch to a severely disabled person in a busy restaurant. The writer, after detailing all the irritants of a hot day in the city, wrote “all these are cut down to size before such a scene.” Two readers offered their own parallel experiences.

Ted wrote: “I had a similar experience at a restaurant in Chicago. A young man was helping a very disabled elderly man in a wheelchair eat his hot dog. When I left, I got up enough courage to go over to the young man and quietly told him: you must be a great guy to be so caring.  He said, ‘Thank you’ and smiled, pleased, I think, to get a little recognition.”

Millie wrote: “Today’s reflection was just what I needed. It reminded me of a walk I had last week.” She was in a dither thinking of how she would cook for overnight guests “after 15 months of such limited human contact (the pandemic). I was ‘on overwhelm.’ I was fretting over the most insignificant tasks. While walking, I came upon a woman who appeared to be recovering from a stroke. We exchanged smiles and hellos, and I returned home with a totally new attitude!! I had a great weekend with friends I hadn’t seen in 18 months! Oh, how I wish I could thank that lovely woman - the Patron Saint of Reality Checks!”

Psalm 27: “I believe I shall see the Lord’s goodness / in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord; be strong; / be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord!”
