Fr. Don's Daily Reflection - August 13, 2024
Psalm 62: “In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you.”
“I think of the college so often. I look at the poverty which surrounds me here (in Central America) and realize how truly lucky I am to have had the opportunity to attend a private college. So many are never given the same chance.” The writer was a 1st Lieutenant on an army exercise in Central America. What an eye-opener such an experience is for a young man from a comfortable Midwestern suburb, the graduate of a small liberal arts college.
The old saying “Noblesse oblige” comes to mind. Security or position, privilege, give rise to obligations. Many another young man or woman in any number of countries of the world has experienced the same sense of the privileged life they have had. The point of talking about it is not to regret or denigrate the comfortable life of these people but to be happy that the new experience makes them more aware of privilege and its responsibilities. And secondly, to hope that enough of this will affect the way we affluent people live and act and vote.
Psalm 27: “I believe I shall see the Lord’s goodness / in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord; be strong; / be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord!”
