Request a Tour of
the Abbey Church
The Abbey Church is open daily before 7:00 am Morning Prayer to about 10:00 pm. Visitors are welcome to tour on their own at any time except during Masses, prayer services, and other events. A complimentary “Self-Guided Tour” leaflet is located in the back of the church immediately behind the last pew to the right of the center aisle facing the sanctuary, and a more-detailed booklet can be purchased from the Abbey Gift Shop just inside the Great Hall or from the university bookstore in the Sexton Commons student center.
Groups of six or more may request a guided tour given by a monk. These typically last an hour but can be shortened if needed. The offering is $5 per adult and $2 per child under 12. Please pay your monk guide with cash or check.
The preferred time for guided tours is 1:30 pm on weekdays. A tour at this time can be part of the Retreat Day program offered by the Saint John’s Bible project. Also, your group may wish to follow the church tour with a visit to the Saint John’s Pottery.
Please make your request for a guided tour (using the form below) as far in advance as possible – at least two weeks before.
Besides being the daily worship space for the monks of Saint John’s Abbey the church is frequently used by students of Saint John’s University and Saint John’s Preparatory School as well as by the local Saint John the Baptist Parish. Thank you for understanding that the needs of these communities take precedence over guided tours.
