Fr. Don's Daily Reflection - June 2, 2024

Psalm 62: “In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you.”

From a previous trip: Going to Mass one Sunday morning in refreshing San Francisco I walked in the opposite direction from hundreds of runners in the annual marathon. The variety of runners: every age represented though at the upper end certainly fewer; every race and color; some sinewy and obviously all-round athletes, others puffing along in not-so-good-looking physical shape.

I was seriously tempted to stop at one of the many coffee shops that lined the route and just watch the runners. That would probably have been even more interesting than sitting at one of these cafes any other time and watching variegated humanity walk by. But I pushed myself on to the church of Saints Peter and Paul for the 9:00 a.m. Mass. That was rewarding, too, in another way. Good music, a moderately relaxed liturgy and a very thoughtful homily.

We are used to the idea, especially if we are parents, that interest in what our children are doing and encouragement for them, are basic, non-negotiable elements in our relation to them. An interest in anything good that our fellow human beings do is good, it seems to me. Going to Mass was good; watching with admiration the marathon runners go by was good, too.

Psalm 27: “I believe I shall see the Lord’s goodness / in the land of the living.

Wait for the Lord; be strong; / be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord!”
