Fr. Don's Daily Reflection - June 6, 2024

Psalm 62: “In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you.”

The large and popular downtown dining room at noon is filled with bustling men and women, many in their twenties and thirties, obviously at the beginning of their careers, eager and lively. There are older, more staid business types, too, and a sprinkling of tourists and shoppers.

At a nearby table are a man and a woman probably in their fifties with a severely disabled person in a wheel chair who can barely be seen over the table top. The man goes to the buffet to get various items. The woman, a picture of gentleness and graciousness, sits with the person in the wheel chair. There are no signs of weariness as she brings the food to the mouth of the helpless one, only the most pleasant and smiling manner.

I don't know which does more to give one a broader perspective on life, the woman giving the care or the dependent person in the wheel chair. The grouchy clerk, the difficulty in finding a parking spot, the humid heat of the sidewalks, worry about work still to be done, even bigger matters like what the future holds, why so-and-so hasn't ever called, all these are cut down to size before such a scene.

Psalm 27: “I believe I shall see the Lord’s goodness / in the land of the living.

Wait for the Lord; be strong; / be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord!”
