Fr. Don's Daily Reflection - March 13, 2024

Psalm 62: “In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you.”

One expression we hear and use frequently is all too appropriate: in the dark. We say we're in the dark about someone's intentions, or I'm in the dark on that matter, or she's in the dark about what's going on. Employees complain that management leaves them in the dark. There is often a lot of darkness, obscurity, and fogginess about what is going on in our world.

Paul says that we don't see everything clearly here and now. But believers do have some light shed on essentials. The Lord says: “I have come to the world as its light, to keep anyone who believes in me from remaining in the dark.” The words and life of the Son of God do give us light on what life is for, where we're going, how we should live, what is truly of value. We know, we aren't just guessing, that honesty and trustworthiness are always good; that to love and be compassionate is never a mistake; that to do good and be generous is right; that God definitely loves us and wishes our good.

Our faith means that we are not in the dark about such fundamentals. The revelation of God in Christ has confirmed for us that in Jesus we see God reflected; that the Lord is my shepherd and I am in his final care. For most of us the election of the current Bishop of Rome, Francis, on this day back in 2013 has meant more awareness of the light and joy found in the Gospel. As we continue in this pandemic Francis preaches hope and work for the poor, the disabled, the ignored and powerless. Still floundering in Lent? Re-read the previous sentence.

Psalm 27: “I believe I shall see the Lord’s goodness / in the land of the living.

Wait for the Lord; be strong; / be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord!”
