Fr. Don's Daily Reflection - September 25, 2024

Psalm 62: “In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from You.”

Jesus, rejected by his own, becomes for us our deliverer from envy, hatred, sin in all forms. It might seem anti-climactic to compare in any way our sufferings and outrages to his, but if the lesson of the cross and resurrection is to have more than general relevance, it must mean something in our daily lives.

In the contemporary world it has become almost fashionable to be the victim, to get out the placards and picket, to scream about our rights and get a lawyer. We could afford to ask ourselves if there isn't some place for acceptance, resignation, maybe for forgiveness.

After all, what we see as injury at times is the kind of oversight and forgetfulness of which we are perfectly capable. Isn't part of faith and the cross some willingness to look for the good that might come of our humiliations, disappointments and even failures? Good for us, good for someone else, good for the whole community.

The lesson of the cross and resurrection is not simply on the level of “universal salvation” or life and death situations but is something we can find in any day's wrongs, hurts and disappointments. The cross is part of the cross and resurrection.

Psalm 27: “I believe I shall see the Lord’s goodness / in the land of the living.

Wait for the Lord; be strong; / be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord!”
