Fr. Don's Daily Reflection - June 21, 2024

Psalm 62: “In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you.”

“Remember,” Jesus says, “where your treasure is, there your heart is also” (Matt 6:21). We are led to hard work, sacrifice, the expenditure of time, thought and means, even to suffering, by the strength of our devotion to someone or some cause. What we are willing to work for and suffer for indicates what we regard as important, where our treasure is.

Any one of us can test the strength of our devotion to God or elsewhere by our willingness to do all these things. For what do we give up our own comfort and schedule? To what do we devote our time and thought, our inventiveness?

What drives us, motivates us, even gets us out of bed in the morning? New parents know what gets them up! Our Lord tells us that it is our treasure that draws us, what counts most for us, to which we give everything. It might be a bit uncomfortable questioning about this, but that is the direction of Jesus' teaching. “Where your treasure is, there your heart is also.”

Psalm 27: “I believe I shall see the Lord’s goodness / in the land of the living.

Wait for the Lord; be strong; / be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord!”
