The author of a book on science and religion says that most people find their security in personal relationships, not in principles, politics, philosophies, wealth, science or even a book like the New Testament. When it comes down to it, we put our trust in people, individuals, friends, spouses. What's wrong with these other things? Possibly it's that they are so impersonal, unfeeling, unresponsive; ideas, principles, cosmic events, none of them will hold you in their arms when you're convulsed with grief or totally make up for a day of harsh encounters. No one ever sang, “You'd be so nice to come home to” to a concept.
The New Testament looks at the partners in marriage as reflecting for each other the unending, unconditional love Christ has for us. We know, best of all from our own experience, that there are people who do this, who are this for others. The experience of the faithfulness of another brings down to earth the love God has for us, in fact, puts flesh on that love. Not to forget: our faithfulness and reliability, our constancy to others, these do the same for them.
