Psalm 62: “In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you.”
“Got no butler, got no maid,/ Still I think I've been overpaid./ Got no silver, got no gold,/ What I got can't be bought or sold ... / I've got the sun in the morning and the moon at night.”
(From Annie Get Your Gun.)
Reminds me of a Zen story of a hermit who while away had been robbed of the little he had in the way of clothes and food. Coming back to his hermitage, he sees the full moon glowing in the sky and regrets not being able to give the robber this beautiful sight. What is most precious to us are often elements that we cannot share with others.
Given each person's amazing uniqueness, it is no surprise that so much cannot be shared or given away. Others often do not understand our interest in some kind of music or movies or theater. They have a hard time seeing what we see in Laura or Jeff. One of the frustrations of human communication is that the way we feel about certain persons or experiences is simply not easily transferable to others. What is most valuable in our lives we often have little choice but to keep to ourselves. Often the glow we get from these people and circumstances we almost unwittingly will share with others.
Psalm 27: “I believe I shall see the Lord’s goodness / in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord; be strong; / be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord!”
