Psalm 62: “In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you.”

The food was fine; the company was friendly; people were willing to listen to each other; we had a lot of laughs. It was one of those meals that was truly restorative. After a day of purposeful work and stress, it was relaxing and invigorating at the same time to enjoy the company of others simply as human beings, not as business prospects. At such times you remember how good and refreshing a meal like this can be.

At a wedding reception the same spirit was evident. College classmates were together again after being separated for a couple of years by jobs and divergent paths since graduation. It is no accident that Jesus and Scripture in general so often compare eternal life or fulfillment in God with a wedding banquet or a festive dinner.

The young men and women were enjoying immensely being together. They mused on how in college they regularly went to eat, josh and talk. Now, several said, placed in a strange city by work, away from friends, the evening meal can be a very lonely time.

Or having to work until 10 in the evening and then to come home, tired, to the same scene. What a come down! That solitary state, of course, is what so often propels them to marriage and a family. At least most of us have the experience of satisfying times together to motivate us for something better. Something to remember, to strive for again and, most of all, to enjoy whenever it happens again.

Psalm 27: “I believe I shall see the Lord’s goodness / in the land of the living.

Wait for the Lord; be strong; / be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord!”
