UNTIL RECENT YEARS the monks of Saint John’s Abbey served in various apostolates at minimal or no salary. Now, in their retirement, the cost of medical care and housing remains a priority for the monastery. Retired and elderly monks remain a part of the campus community, living at Saint John’s in the Saint Raphael Hall Care Center and continuing in their dedication to praying for the many needs of friends, alumni, benefactors, and the world in general. The Abbey employs twenty full and part-time professional staff members in Saint Raphael Hall to attend to the care and medical needs of up to twenty-four resident monks, as well as tending to the intermittent care of all the other monks in the monastery who need medical attention. Donor support is essential to maintaining good medical care for those who have done so much for the educational and pastoral needs of alumni, parishioners, and others.
