オブレート、ご友人そしてお世話になっている皆様へ

Dear Oblates, Volunteers and Friends of Trinity Benedictine Monastery,
三位一体ベネディクト修道院共同体は過去一年の間、私たちの将来を見据え、どのような重要課題があるかを考え、話し合いを続けて参りました。そして祈りと熟考の結果、以下のことが差し迫った問題点として浮かび上がってきました。

Over the course of the past year, the community of Trinity Benedictine Monastery has engaged in important discussions to identify the challenges we face as we look to the future. After having given the matter prayerful and thoughtful consideration, we have identified five critical issues:

1．過去約70年、この共同体は日本で活動して参りました。現在、7名の修道士がいますが、その内2名が日本人、6名が終生誓願者（3名は75歳以上）、残る1名が有期誓願者です。　

. トマス・ウォール神父、83歳、アメリカ人、引退

. ウィリアム・スクドラーレク神父、75歳、アメリカ人、2015年4月に富士見への派遣が終了。その後、修道諸宗教対話事務総長の仕事を継続。

. トニー・ゴルマン神父、55歳、アメリカ人、那須のトラピスチヌ修道院付き司祭を継続。

. ローマン・パワー神父、75歳、アメリカ人、富士見の院長を継続。

. パウロ・多田真人修道士、60歳、日本人。

. ヨハネ・クリゾストム龍里挺修道士、33歳、中国人、セント・ジョンズ神学校で勉学予定。

. キシミリアン・岡秀太修道士、46歳、日本人、2015年3月21日に有期誓願期間終了。

. After nearly 70 years in Japan, our community now consists of seven monks, only two of whom are Japanese. Six are in solemn vows (three of them are 75 or older) and one in simple vows:

. Fr Thomas Wahl, 83, American, retiring

. Fr William Skudlarek, 75, American, concluding his commitment to Fujimi in April 2015 and continuing his work with Monastic Interreligious Dialogue

. Fr Tony Gorman, 55, American, for now continuing his chaplaincy with the Trappist Sisters in Nasu

. Fr Roman Paur, 75, American, continuing as prior

. Br Makoto Paul Tada, 60, Japanese

. Br Liting John Chrysostom Long, 33, Chinese, planning priesthood studies at Saint John’s

. Br Shuuta Maximilian Oka, 46, Japanese, in simple vows ending 21 March 2015

2. ミネソタ州のセント・ジョンズ修道院はこれ以上、修道士を日本に派遣することが出来ません。 

Saint John’s Abbey, Collegeville, Minnesota, is not able to send any more monks to Japan;

3. 長期的に見て、日本人の責任者を立てられる見込みがありません。　

 There is no one available for long-term Japanese leadership;

4. 有望な志願者が居らず、また、将来、終生誓願を立てる見込みの召命もほとんどありません。

There are no follow-up inquiries from prospective candidates and little likelihood of attracting vocations through solemn profession; and

5. 富士見の共同体はベネディクト会の修道生活に方向づける養成を行うことが出来ません。

The monastery no longer has adequate resources for formation in Benedictine monastic life.

たとえ近い将来、日本あるいはアジアからの召命があったとしても（恐らくないと思われますが）、私たちの経験から見て、彼らが終生誓願までの養成、司祭養成、指導者としての能力を発揮するまでの一連の過程、少なくとも10年は掛かる過程を全うする保証はほとんどありません。実際、1947年にセント・ジョンズ修道院が東京の目黒に修道院と小教区を設立して以来、荘厳誓願立願、定住したのは3名（日本人2名、中国人1名）だけです。

 Even if Japanese or other Asian candidates were to present themselves in the near future — which is most unlikely — our history gives little assurance that they would stay and profess solemn vows, engage in priesthood studies, and develop seasoned leadership abilities, a process that takes at the very least ten years.  In fact, since Saint John’s founded Saint Anselm Priory and Parish in Meguro in 1947, only three monks (two Japanese-born and one Chinese) have made solemn vows and stayed.

私たちは以上の点を明らかにした上で、母院であるセント・ジョンズ修道院ジョン・クラッセン院長に報告し、同時に母院の修道共同体に、私たちの現状を検討し、日本の共同体の将来を決定することを依頼しました。私自身、12月初旬に予定されているセント・ジョンズ修道院での検討と採決の場に出席する予定で、降誕祭前に皆様に書面でこの決定をお知らせできると思います。

We have forwarded these observations to Abbot John Klassen at Saint John’s Abbey, our mother house in Minnesota, and asked that the monastic community there review our present situation and make a determination about our future in Japan.  I will be present at Saint John’s for the community discussions and probable vote in early December.  I will inform you in writing of the decision before Christmas.

皆様も同じかと思いますが、私たちはこの様な展開になったことをとても悲しんでおります。セント・ジョンズ修道院の決定が聖霊の導きの下に行われるよう、お祈りをお願いするとともに、長年にわたり、ベネディクト会修道院に対して皆様がお示しくださったお恵みに、心よりお礼申し上げます。

Our community is deeply saddened by these developments, as I know you are also.  We appreciate your prayers for the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the deliberations of the Saint John’s community with profound gratitude for the many blessings of the Benedictine presence in Japan over the years.

この度私たちは、ミネソタ州のセント・ジョンズ修道院の修道士たちが、三位一体ベネディクト修道院を閉じる決定をしたことを、深い悲しみと共に皆様にお伝えしなければなりません。宗教の違いを超え、多くの方々と私たちが相互の愛情と尊敬の強いきずなで結ばれていることを私たちは知っています。三位一体ベネディクト修道院の修道士たちはこの困難な決定を受け入れていますが、来日後70年目となる時に幕を閉じなければならなくなった状況に深い悲しみを覚えます。

We are profoundly sad in informing you that after prayerful consideration the monks of Saint John’s Abbey, Collegeville, Minnesota, have decided to close Trinity Benedictine Monastery.  We are very much aware of the deep bond of mutual affection and respect shared by many devoted people across faith traditions with the Benedictines in Fujimi.  Although the monks of Trinity Benedictine Monastery agree with this difficult decision we deeply regret the conditions that require ending what will be seventy years in Japan.

修道院を閉じずに、今後も日本にベネディクト会が存続できることを望み、多くの選択肢を考慮してまいりました。それにも拘らず、現状および将来の状況のもとでは、今後の継続は不可能と判断いたしました。私たち修道士が受け入れたこの決定に至った5つの重要な理由は、1）修道士の減少と高齢化、2）セント・ジョンズ修道院は最早これ以上、修道士を富士見に送ることが出来ない、3）長期的に見て、日本人のリーダーがいない、4）現在、志願者がいないこと、更に将来においても召命が見込めない、5）ベネディクトの霊性に基づいた包括的な養成プログラムがないこと等が挙げられます。

A number of alternatives to closing were carefully examined in the hope of extending the presence of the Benedictine men in Japan.   However, under the present circumstances, and into the future, continuation is no longer viable.  Five critical reasons leading to this decision, which all the monks in Fujimi accept, are 1) fewer and aging community members, 2) Saint John’s is no longer able to provide additional monks, 3) lack of available long-term Japanese leadership, 4) the absence of any inquiries from prospective candidates and the unlikelihood of attracting vocations, and 5) inadequate comprehensive Benedictine formation resources. 

修道院を閉じる時期は決定していませんが、2016年秋以降になるのではないかと思います。

The actual closing date has not been set but will not be before the Fall, 2016.

聖アンセルモ修道院は1947年、セント・ジョンズ修道院により創立されました。其の後、ベネディクトの霊性に焦点を合わせた共同生活を送ることと召命の増加を主な目標とし、1999年に目黒から富士見へ移転しました。しかし、実際、67年間の日本での活動期間中、終生誓願を立て定住しているのは、3名の修道士（2名の日本人と1名の中国人）のみです。この間、セント・ジョンズ修道院の約40名の修道士がこの重要な宣教活動に従事してきました。

Saint John’s Abbey founded Saint Anselm’s priory and parish in 1947.  In 1999 the Benedictines moved from Meguro to Fujimi primarily to focus on Benedictine community life and to attract vocations.  In fact, however, in our sixty-seven year history in Japan a total of only three monks (two Japanese-born and one Chinese) have made life-long vows and stayed.  During this time about forty monks of Saint John’s have served in this important mission.

どのような時であれ、この様な非常に厳しい知らせを受け取り、理解するのは、難しいことと思います。ましてやクリスマスと新年を迎えるこの時期においては、尚更のことでしょう。しかし、この決定を出来るだけ早い時期に皆様にお知らせすることが重要ではないかと考えました。日本の人々に奉仕する機会に恵まれたことに深く感謝しています。私たちが日本にいる間、私たちの宣教活動にご協力くださった多くの方々から頂いた恵みに感謝しています。これからも、世界平和のために祈り、全ての人を尊敬し、受け入れることを通して、福音の光を輝かせるという、私たち共通の使命を続けていくことが出来ますように。

I realize that this very difficult information may be hard to absorb and accept at any time and especially in this Christmas and New Year Season.  However we felt it important to inform you as early as possible after the decision was made.  Our community is very grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of Japan.  We are joyful of the many blessings we have received through our presence and the countless faithful who partner with us in our mission.  May we continue in our common mission to show the light of the Gospel by respecting and welcoming all people, and praying for peace throughout the world.

Trinity Benedictine Monastery, established by Saint John’s Abbey, Collegeville, Minnesota, USA, in 1947, will be closing this summer.  We accepted the offer of the Fujimi Kogen Hospital to purchase the property that will become available for its purposes in September 2016.

Please be aware that our ministries from Fujimi, regrettably, will discontinue after Saturday 13 August.

We have confirmed four closing events with our friends and associates and invite your participation:

Sunday 24 July 9:30:  Fujimi Parish Mass of Thanksgiving and reception in the parish church.

Sunday 31 July 11:30: Filipino Faithful of Okaya, Suwa, Chino, Fujimi and Kofu area Mass of Thanksgiving with Prior Roman, presider, and community in the monastery chapel.  A luncheon follows.

Thursday 11 August 12:00: Mass of Thanksgiving in the Fujimi monastery chapel with Bishop Umemura presiding, and Abbot John Klassen OSB. A luncheon follows.

Saying goodbye is almost never easy.  Often it feels final, the last time we will be together.  It is sad and painful because it may be true.  But it is hardest because of a long relationship of good work, affection, mutual sharing, and deep gratitude.  These are the result of steadfast love over a long time, for us as Benedictines in Japan, nearly 70 years of ministry and building endearing relationships.

さようならを告げることは決して容易（たやす）いことではありません。それはしばしば終りを意味し、これが最後の時であると予感させます。それが現実になるかもしれないために、悲しく苦痛に満ちたものになります。しかし、意義深い仕事において協力し、愛情をもって，お互いに分かち合い、深い感謝の気持とともに長く続いた関わりであるために、このさようならは、もっとも堪え難いものです。これは、長い間の揺（ゆる）ぎない愛の結果であり、私たち日本におけるベネディクト修道士たちにとっては、７０年近くの活動とそこで培（つちか）われた思いやり深い関わりがあるためです。

Our monks came to Japan in the fall of 1947 when Saint John’s Abbey in Minnesota and the Archdiocese of Tokyo created Saint Anselm’s Priory and Parish near the Meguro Station.  The abbey committed itself to this mission initiative at the pleading of Father Hildebrand Yaiser and Father Joseph Schmerbach, the last two remaining monks from a previous Benedictine settlement begun in 1931 from the Archabbey of Beuron in Germany. However, that mission near Chigasaki was disbanded after only 10 years.

私たちの修道士たちは、1947年の秋、ミネソタ州のセント・ジョンズ大修道院と東京大司教区が目黒駅の近くに聖アンセルモ修道院小教区を設立した時に日本に来ました。これは、セント・ジョンズ大修道院がヒルデブランド・ヤイゼル師とジョセフ・シュメールバッハ師の要請に積極的に応え、この活動に力を注ぐ決断をした結果でした。この２人はドイツのボイロン大修道院から来日し、1931年に始まり、10年後に茅ヶ崎のベネディクトの施設が閉鎖された後にも、日本に留まった二人の修道士たちでした。

The Meguro Church community grew quickly to hundreds of families.  Soon the new church building designed by Mr Anton Raymond was built to accommodate the worshipping faithful.  Many non-Christian neighborhood parents also appreciated the kindergarten on the property.

目黒教会は急速に拡大し、数百の家族の共同体に成長しました。まもなく、アントン・レイモンド氏の設計による新しい聖堂が信徒達のために建てられました。キリスト信者ではない多くの近辺の保護者たちが同じ敷地に造られた幼稚園を高く評価し感謝しました。

Over all these years, attracting Japanese vocations, however, was disappointing.  In fifty-two years in Meguro just two Japanese-born men made their solemn profession and stayed:  Father Hidenari Peter Kawamura who died of heart failure in 2013 and Brother Makoto Paul Tada.  The lack of vocations was a big concern for the future of the Benedictines in Japan.

しかしながら、この間（かん）日本における召命は失望的でした。52年の間に、2013年に心臓発作で亡くなったペトロ川村英成司祭と、パウロ多田真人修道士の２人が終世誓願を立て、留まりました。召命が限られていることは、日本のベネディクト会の将来のために大きな心配事となりました。

So in a series of meetings beginning in the early 1990s the community decided with the encouragement of Abbot Timothy Kelly to conclude its ministry in Tokyo and move to Fujimi with a focus on Benedictine monastic living, a plan that the monks hoped would eventually attract vocations. 

そこで、1990年代初期に始められた度重（たびかさ）なる会議において、共同体はテイモシー・ケリー大院長の勧めに伴い、東京における司牧を終了し、ベネディクトの修道的生活に重点を置き、その結果召命が増えるであろうと修道士たちが希望した計画として、富士見に移転することを決定しました。

The Fujimi property was purchased from the Redemptorists and Mr Kenjiro Takagaki was contracted to design the new monastery.  Construction of the building was completed by June 1999 when the monks moved into the new facility that was named Trinity Benedictine Monastery.  The work of the monks became the guesthouse apostolate, pastoral service in regional parishes, and chaplaincy with the Nasu Trappist Sisters.  The Meguro Church became home to the Catholic Tokyo International Center.

富士見の土地はレデンプトリスト修道会から購入し、高垣健次郎氏が新しい修道院の設計を請け負ってくださいました。建物は1999年６月に完成し、修道士たちが入居して、三位一体ベネディクト修道院と名付けられました。ここで修道士達はゲストハウス，地域の教区における司牧の奉仕、那須トラピスト修道院付き指導司祭の役割を果たしました。目黒教会はカトリック東京国際センターの拠点になりました。

Trinity Benedictine Monastery enjoyed spurts of vocational interest and optimism in Fujimi over the years including simple professions.  Quite a few Japanese men, nearly all converts, have tested our Benedictine life and made simple vows but all have shied away from life-time commitments in Fujimi.  Only Chinese-born Brother Liting John Chrysostom Long made solemn profession.  He will continue his studies this fall at Saint John’s.  The prime reason we are having to make this decision at this time is the inability of Saint John’s Abbey to continue to provide monks to serve in this monastery.  The number of monks at Saint John’s has decreased dramatically over the past twenty years. 

三位一体ベネディクト修道院は、数年の間有期誓願者を含めて爆発的な召命への若者の関心と、召命の楽観的な見通しを楽しみました。殆んどは改宗者でしたが、かなりの若者たちがベネディクトの生活を試み、有期誓願を立てました。しかし、全員が富士見に生涯定住することを憚（はばか）り退いて行きました。唯一中国生まれのヨハネ・クリゾストモ ロン・リーティン修道士が終世誓願を立てました。彼は今年の秋からセント・ジョンズで勉学を続けます。今この時期に三位一体ベネディクト修道院を閉鎖する決定をした主要な理由は、セント・ジョンズ大修道院から、ここで奉仕する修道士を新たに派遣することが出来なくなったことです。セント・ジョンズの修道士の数は過去20 年間に劇的に減少しました。

Since 1947 thirty-two Saint John’s monks served the people of Japan in both Meguro and Fujimi.  Among them let me single out especially Father Neal Lawrence, the tanka poet who had a special impact in the Meguro community through the spiritual and cultural program called STAIFA along with other pastoral initiatives.  He was honored by the Imperial Palace for his official post-war responsibilities toward the revival of the Japanese and Asian economies.

1947年以来、32人のセント・ジョンズの修道士たちが目黒と富士見において、日本の人々に奉仕しました。中でも、特にニール・ローレンス神父は、短歌の詩人で、STAIFAと呼ばれる霊的、文化的プログラムを通して、また他の布教活動においても指導力を発揮し、目黒の共同体に特別な影響を及ぼしました。彼は戦後の日本とアジアの経済復興を促進する責任ある役職のために、皇居で勲章を与えられました。

Our Benedictine community in Japan is blessed by the Japanese faithful who partner with us in our life and work together, perhaps especially our Oblates, as well as board members and volunteers.  The monks are profoundly indebted to your witness of faith, thoughtfulness, and generosity.  This is why it is so difficult to say goodbye.  Let us continue to hold one another in our prayers and listen with the ear of our hearts to the call of the Gospel.

私たち日本におけるベネディクト共同体は、日本の信徒の皆様，特にオブレートの方々と理事会のメンバーの皆様、またボランティアの方々が、私達の生活と活動におけるパートナーとして協力して下さる恩恵に恵まれております。修道士たちは皆様の信仰、思慮深さ、寛大さに対して深く感謝しています。そのために，さようならを告げることはとても難しいことです。これからもお互いのために祈り、心の耳を傾けて福音の教えを聴きましょう。
